UA STIRLING – SHEARLING SALE

A top price of £16,000 was achieved in the south-type shearling rings at United Auctions’ massive one-day sale of Blackface rams at Stirling, which featured more than 1000 head of breeding rams to include Perth or north-type rams.

Leading the section was the pen leader from brothers, Willie and Ewan Bennie, Merkins, Gartocharn. Their home-bred shearling, which is a son of a £6000 Nunnerie tup, and bred from a home-bred ewe by a £1000 Hartside, Lammermuir sold jointly to Lanarkshire breeders, Alistair and David MacArthur, Nunnerie, Elvanfoot, and Malcolm Coubrough, Hartside, Biggar.Dunlops of Elmscleugh sold this shearling for £14,000


Later in the day, Willie Dunlop and sons Quintin and William, Elmscleugh, Dunbar, received £14,000 for a shearling by their own £32,000 Elmscleugh sold last year at Lanark. The dam is a daughter of a £45,000 Midlock tup. He also sold to the MacArthurs, Nunnerie, along with Robert Cockburn, Hill of Errol, Perth and the Wights of Midlock, Crawford, Biggar.

Ian Hunter, Dalchirla, Crieff, sold to a high of £8000 for a shearling selling in a two-way split to Billy and Andrew Renwick, Blackhouse, Yarrow, and Malcolm Coubrough, Hartside. He is by a home-bred son of a £45,000 Nunnerie and bred from a £24,000 Connachan sired-ewe.

Dalchirla’s pen leader made £6500 selling jointly to Robert Flett, Crackaig, Ardersier, and Peter Junor, Ballachraggan, Inverness. He is by a £100,000 Midlock and out of a ewe by Boris – a home-bred son of a £10,000 Nunnerie ram retained for breeding.

Matching that £8000 sale was a shearling from Alan McClymont, Kirkstead, Yarrow, which was knocked down to Inverness breeders, John Mathieson, Milton of Aberarder, and Robert MacKenzie, The Glebe. He is a son of a £14,000 Glenrath tup and bred from a ewe sired by a £16,000 Wanwoodhill.


Just behind, on £7500, Alan Smith, Wester Crosswoodhill, West Calder, sold a tup by a home-bred son of a £13,000 Dryhope, bred from a ewe by a home-bred son of a Blackhouse tup. He headed home to Crawford with Andrew and Jen Craig, Normangill.

Stephen Duncan of the Livet flock, Achdregnie, Glenlivet, had a field day selling to a top of £6500 and £5000, for sons of an £11,000 Craigdarroch. The dearest, which is bred from a £3500 Williamhope sired-ewe sold to Stuart Robson, Toft House, Otterburn, Newcastle, and Quickenin Cote Partnership, Westhills, Morpeth.


Mr Duncan’s pen leader which made £5000, was purchased by Billy Graham, Craigdarroch, Sanquhar. The dam is sired by a £5200 Elmscleugh.

Making £6000 was the best from Oswald Wardrope, Outerwards, of Brisbane Glen Estates, which sold to Iain and David McArthur, Arnicle, Glenbarr, Tarbert. This shearling is the result of a £1000 Culdoach sire onto an Auldhouseburn sired-ewe.

This was followed at £4800 by a shearling from Sam McClymont, and sons William and Scott, Tinnis, Yarrow. Backed by home-bred genetics, he is by a home-bred son of a £14,000 Glenrath and bred from a £10,000 Tinnis sired-ewe. The Hamiltons, Aikengall, Innerwick, Dunbar, were the final bidders for this one.

On the same money was a shearling from Stuart McDougall, Millhouse, Kinross, when finding a new home with Jamie Murray, Sewingshields, Haydon Bridge, Hexham. This one is a result of a £3000 Kirkstead sire, onto a £1700 Millhouse sired-ewe.


Another purchase of Malcolm Coubrough, Hartside, at £4500 was an Allanfauld shearling from Archie and John MacGregor, Stirling. He is a son of a 30,000gns McCurdy and bred from a gimmer purchased from David Rock, which is sired by a £2000 Crossflatt.


Best from Donald and Jimmy MacGregor’s Dyke pen from Milton of Campsie, at £4500 was a son of a £17,000 Midlock out of a ewe by Poldark. He was knocked down to John Robertson who manages Crosswood Hill, West Calder on behalf of J and M Hamilton.

The last pen of the day from Neil and Jamie McNicol, Fechan, sold to £4200 for a son of a £10,000 Elmscleugh, out of a ewe by a £2200 Elmscleugh. Buying back some of their own genetics, he sold to Elmscleugh.
