BLACKFACE IN LAMB FEMALE SALE
An excellent show of in-lamb Blackface females at Lanark saw trade peak at 4100gns and 38 lots average out at £1572.24, with a 93% clearance.
The pre-sale show was judged by Robert Shaw, who is shepherd for the MacNicols' 1300-ewe flock at Turnalt, Argyll, and also runs a flock of 300 ewes with his own family at Acharonich, Lochgilphead. He described the quality of the entries as ‘outstanding’ and backed up his judging decisions by purchasing his champion and reserve animals – both gimmers from the Wight family, Midlock, Crawford, which he said were “exceptional sheep – just my type and a credit to the breed.”
Making the top price of 4100gns was the reserve champion, a gimmer by the home-bred Avenger, which was a son of £30,000 Crossflatt. Out of a ewe by a home-bred son of £8000 Dyke, named Stag, this one sold due with a single lamb to £18,000 Dyke.
The champion, sold for 3200gns, also went to Robert Shaw, was a gimmer by the home-bred Emperor, out of a ewe by £45,000 Nunnerie. She is also due with a single to £18,000 Dyke.
Two ewes from the Midlock pen sold at 3400gns and 3100gns, both to Donald McVicar, Lephinchapel, Cairndow. Dearer of the two was a daughter of Stag, out of a ewe by £14,000 Dalchirla, which is carrying a single to £18,000 Dyke. The other ewe is by £45,000 Nunnerie, out of a ewe by £22,000 Lurg. She’s due with twins to Emperor.
A gimmer from the Wights’ Midlock Glespin consignment made 2600gns, to Alan Orr, Islay. She’s by Emperor and out of a daughter of £8000 Dyke and sold carrying a single to £40,000 Lurg.
Also from the Midlock Glespin pen was a gimmer by a home-bred son of £75,000 Dyke, which made 2200gns, to Birthwood Farm, Coulter, Biggar. She’s out of a ewe by a home-bred son of £45,000 Nunnerie, and is carrying twins to Emperor.
The day’s second top price was 3500gns, for a gimmer from Stuart Barclay’s Harestone consignment. She is a daughter of £82,000 Loughash, and sold scanned with twins to the £48,000 Orchilmore. Buyer was Ewan Fraser, Balgowan, Newtonmore.
Best from John Murray’s Crossflatt entry, from Muirkirk, was 3000gns for a gimmer by the home-bred Titan, out of a ewe by £125,000 Nunnerie. A third prize winner at Muirkirk Show last year, she sold due with a single lamb to £48,000 Orchilmore. Buyer was J McCurdy, Broughshane.
Ewen Macmillan, Lurg, Fintry, sold a gimmer at 2300gns to R Munro, Ulvaferry, Isle of Mull. Sire of that one is a home-bred tup named The Keeper, while the dam is by £22,000 Dalchirla. She’s due with twins to another home-bred sire, Lurg Red King.
