Dingwall Ram Sale

Big was beautiful at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ show and sale of Blackface rams where an increased entry of 182 rams sold to a ring full to capacity of buyers.  

Overall averages held up well against last year’s record high when £10,000 was paid for a shearling ram.  

Instead, this year saw a much more realistic trade with a top price of £2100 from A and J Nairn, Clashnoir, Glenlivet, who also produced the lead flock average, selling 18 at £841.67. 

The pre-sale show, judged by Finlay McIntyre, Dunallister Estate, saw the champion, a shearling from John Shearer, Croughly, Tomintoul realise £1000, with the reserve, the second prize winner to the champion, from Robert Flett, Crackaig Blackies, Blackpark Croft making £500. Mr Flett also sold the lead priced tup lamb at £550. 

Aged rams peaked at £2000 from Abersky, Torness. 

By the end of the day, 182 head averaged £586.87 (-£59.20). 

Overall, 232 ewe lambs averaged £58.87; 1581 ewes levelled at £45.61 and 579 gimmers cashed in at £116.07. The 101 store lambs sold to £63 for a Blackface from Auchnafearn, Grantown on Spey.
