DALMALLY RAM LAMBS

163 ram lambs sold to average £2877.85 (+£102.93 for 30 fewer sold)

Blackface rams were in demand at the Association’s annual sale at United Auctions’ Dalmally Mart, selling to a top of £65,000 twice, with 11 ram lambs and 18 shearlings hitting five-figure prices and sale averages up in both sections.

Overall, 163 ram lambs sold to average £2875, up by £100 on the year for 30 fewer sold, while 555 aged rams and shearlings levelled out at £1794, an increase of £104 for 79 more sold.

Top price of the day came from the ram lamb ring, with Hugh and Alan Blackwood selling two at £65,000 apiece from their Auldhouseburn flock, based in Muirkirk. First at that money, was a son of last year’s £65,000 Crossflatt purchase, out of a ewe by £160,000 Dyke, which was knocked down to Charlie Harkin, of The Rock flock, while the other, a son of a £55,000 Dyke, out of a daughter of £82,000 Loughash, sold to John Harkin, Loughash.

Thomas Muirhead enjoyed his best trade yet, with lambs from his Orchilmore flock at Blair Atholl, with the pen leader selling at £48,000 to three buyers, including Stuart Barclay, Harestone, Insch; John Murray, Crossflatt, Muirkirk, and Robert Flett, for his Crackaig flock at Ardersier. He’s a son of the £65,000 Auldhouseburn, bought last year, while the dam is by a home-bred son of Crossflatt Blaze.

At £22,000, Billy and Andrew Renwick, Blackhouse, Yarrow, sold a ram lamb by £50,000 Crossflatt, to Auldhouseburn, and the Dunlops at Elmscleugh, Dunbar, who themselves had a lamb at £14,000, by a £4200 Towiemore, which sold to Thomas Muirhead, Orchilmore, along with Richard Carruthers, Merkland, Thornhill.

Ian Hunter’s Dalchirla consignment of ram lambs peaked at £18,000, with that son of £18,000 Glenrath, selling to John Harkin, Loughash, while another, by £70,000 Dalchirla, made £12,000, selling to Archie and John MacGregor, Allanfauld, Kilsyth.

Lead price for David and Jock Jackson’s Pole flock, at Lochgoilhead, was £15,000, for a ram lamb by a £52,000 Dalblair, which sold to Ian and David McArthur, Arnicle, Glenbarr.

Rory Kerr, who farms at The Glen, Drymen, received his best price yet, selling a son of the £70,000 Upper Wellwood, for £10,000 to Sam McClymont, Tinnis, Yarrow.

The other ram lamb at five-figures came from the Dunlops at Upper Wellwood, Muirkirk, with their son of the home-bred Demon, selling at £10,000, also to Tinnis.

Over in the shearling ram ring, the Ramsay brothers, of Milnmark, Dalry, achieved their highest ever price, selling one at £55,000, to Malcolm Coubrough, Hartside, Lamington, and Tom Renwick, Williamhope, Clovenfords. He’s sired by a £36,000 Dalchirla, while the dam is by a £22,000 Lurg. Also from Milnmark was an £18,000 seller, by the same sire, which sold to the Wallaces at Fingland, Dalry.

Ewen Macmillan’s Lurg flock, at Fintry, also enjoyed its best trade yet, selling to £40,000, for a shearling by a son of a £3500 Allanfauld, out of a ewe by £18,000 Elmscleugh. It was knocked down to four big flocks including Dalchirla and Auldhouseburn, along with the Wights at Midlock, Crawford, and the MacArthurs at Nunnerie, Elvanfoot.

The Wights themselves sold to £38,000 from their Midlock flock. That one, by their home-bred Emperor, sold to Willie and Euan Bennie, Merkins, Gartocharn; Duncan MacGregor, Burnhead, Kilsyth, and Jimmy and Donald MacGregor, Dyke, Milton of Campsie. Two others from Midlock made £10,000 apiece – with one going to Robert Cockburn, Hill of Errol, Errol, and the other to Dalchirla and Perry McNickle, Gartincaber, Drymen.

Also enjoying their best price yet were father and son Keith and Andrew Campbell, Overburns, Biggar, who sold a son of Midlock Buck, for £30,000, to the MacGregors’ Dyke flock.

Being early in the shearling sale didn’t negatively affect Dalchirla’s trade, with Ian Hunter selling to a top of £22,000, for one by a son of £100,000 Midlock. That one sold to Burncastle Farming at Lauder, while another made £18,000, to Mitchellslacks at Thornhill, along with Una Graham, Kirkland and Willie Graham, Craigdarroch, both Sanquhar. Also from Dalchirla, was a £12,000 seller, which went to the Silloans flock and the Dudlees flock, both Rochester.

Best for Robert Cockburn, Hill of Errol, was £16,000, for a son of a £14,000 Elmscleugh, which sold to the Dunlops at Elmscleugh.

Others at £16,000 included one from Elmscleugh, by a son of £125,000 Nunnerie, which sold to Craig Paterson for the Aberuchill flock in Crieff, and one from Williamhope, sired by £38,000 Allanfauld, which went to Stuart McDougall, Millhouse, Kelty, and the Hamiltons’ Crosswoodhill flock at West Calder.

Willie and Euan Bennie’s Merkins consignment peaked at £14,000, for a son of £70,000 Dalchirla, which sold to the Taylors at Dall, Killin, with another by the same sire making £11,000, to WS Robson, Yatesfield, Otterburn.

Late in the day, the Campbells’ Grimmet flock, at Straiton, managed by Joe Cockburn, sold to £12,000, with that son of £4200 Elmscleugh going to the Stevensons at Balrazzie, Ballantrae; the Mitchells at Little Larg, New Luce and Glen, Gatehouse of Fleet, while a shearling by £10,000 Williamhope from Sam McClymont, Tinnis, topped at £11,000, to Tom Renwick, Williamhope.
