Female Show & Sale Report 2019

A strong demand for in-lamb Blackface females saw averages rise by £20 per head on the year at Lanark on Saturday 23rd February. Overall, 65 lots levelled out at £1530.25, with 23 ewes leveling at £2189.02 and 42 gimmers averaging out at £1169.50.

Top price at 8000gns, was a one-crop ewe from John and Charlie Harkins Northern Ireland-based Loughash flock. Sired by a £3500 Auldhouseburn and out of a ewe by the Buffalo, a Dalwyne tup, this one sold carrying twins to £26,000 Auldhouseburn. Buyer was fellow Northern Ireland breeder Veronica Fullerton, Draperstown, Co Londonderry.
Another one-crop ewe from the Loughash pen sold at 2600gns, this time a daughter of a £20,000 Loughash, out of a ewe by a £24,000 Elmscleugh. Due twins to a £45,000 Loughash sire, she sold to C Gallagher, Cappry, Ballybofey, Co Donegal.
Making the days second top price of 4000gns, was a two-crop ewe from John Murray, Crossflatt, Muirkirk. Sired by a £16,000 Nunnerie, out of a ewe by McCoy, she is scanned with a single, by £12,000 Dalwyne. Final bidder was David Morrison, Dalwyne, Barr, Girvan.
Also from Crossflatt, a gimmer by Tornado, out of a £32,000 Allanfauld daughter, sold at 3200gns, to E Fraser, Balgowan Farm, Laggan. That one is in lamb to a £32,000 Dalchirla, scanned with twins.
Robert Cockburn received a steady trade for his Perthshire-based Hill of Errol consignment, selling to a top of 3800gns, for a gimmer by a £2400 Lurg sire. Her dam is by a son of £30,000 Aitkenhead and she sold carrying twins to £5500 Nunnerie, to R Loughrey, Limavady, Co Londonderry.
Mr Cockburn had earlier secured the pre-sale show championship  judged by Robert Marshall, Potts of Rayne, Meikle Wartle  with a one-crop ewe by £13,000 Troloss, which sold at 2500gns to Neil and Stuart Barclay, Harestone, Banchory. Out of a ewe by £60,000 Nunnerie, she is due twins to a £2800 Midlock tup.
Best for Mary McCall Smith, of Connachan, Crieff, was a 3400gns bid for a one-crop ewe by DaVinci, which sold in lamb to a home-bred grand-son of £4000 Gass, to Craig Paterson, Aberuchill, Comrie.
Making the same money was a one-crop ewe from Ewen Macmillan, Lurg, Fintry, which sold to the Harkins Loughash flock. She is by a home-bred son of a £15,000 Midlock, and due twins to the £80,000 Auldhouseburn tup bought last year.
The only two North-type Blackies in the catalogue proved popular, selling to 3400gns for David Baillie, Calla, Carnwath. Making that price was a three-crop ewe by a home-bred son of £6500 Woolfords, which had been placed champion at Perth Show last year. Due twins to £5000 Auchdregnie, she sold to Northern Ireland breeder Tom Daly.
The other from Calla, a gimmer by an 8000gns McEvoy, carrying twins to a home-bred son of £3500 Haughton, sold at 2600gns to Billy Grant, Cloughfin, Clonmany.
Last in the ring, Hugh and Alan Blackwoods Auldhouseburn consignment from Muirkirk, sold to 2800gns for a gimmer by the £85,000 Elmscleugh, carrying a single to £160,000 Elmscleugh. She went to E Fraser, Balgowan, Laggan.
Paul Coulson, High Staward, Hexham, sold a gimmer by £36,000 Auldhouseburn, carrying a single to £22,000 Elmscleugh, also to the Harkins in Northern Ireland.
